Most people have experienced a hangover headache at some point. At Hangover Hospital, we know that these pounding headaches make even the smallest noises seem ear-splitting. Some people wear sunglasses because their excruciating headache has made them temporarily sensitive to light. So, when you’ve had too much to drink and wake up with a painful headache, is there any way to cure it? While many may choose to simply wait it out, there are some home remedies you can use to make you feel better in the meantime.
Vitamin B6
The B vitamins are known for generally making a person feel better. A study has shown that vitamin B6 is good for hangover headaches in particular. Vitamin B6 increases your body’s metabolism, so it processes the alcohol quicker and gets it out of your system faster. If you don’t want to take a supplement, you can find vitamin B6 in many foods including fruit, potatoes, and poultry products. If you take it with a meal, vitamin B6 may also help cure a hangover headache even faster.
NSAIDs
NSAIDs stands for ‘nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs’, such as Tylenol. However, if you have the urge to reach for Tylenol when you first wake up with a hangover headache, don’t. Tylenol contains acetaminophen and when this is combined with alcohol, it can lead to stomach bleeding. Acetaminophen is also very hard on the liver, which is already working very hard while you nurse your hangover. Instead, choose an NSAID such as Aleve, which will help with your headache and not wreak havoc on your system.
Gatorade or Pedialyte
Pedialyte is iconically known for helping with hangover headaches, and it’s not just folklore. Pedialyte is full of electrolytes, and a study has shown these can help hydrate a person much more quickly. Hangover headaches are generally caused by dehydration, so these drinks may hydrate you more quickly than drinking just water alone. You don’t have to stock up on Pedialyte specifically, either. Any electrolyte-laden drink, such as Gatorade, will do. Just make sure you dilute all of these drinks with water first. They contain a lot of sugar, which can worsen your hangover headache.
Light Exercise
Due to the fact that your reaction time is slower and you can’t concentrate as well during a hangover, vigorous exercise is not recommended, particularly if you use machines. However, light exercise can help. Go for a short walk or do light activity, such as gardening. Being lightly active will also help your metabolism get rid of alcohol. Some also argue that light exercise helps with a hangover headache simply because it gets you out of the house and doing something else.
