Although there are many hangover cures on the market, people are always trying to come up with newer and better remedies. Most recently, two Yale students think they may have come up with one of the best ones yet. It’s called SunUp and unlike other hangover remedies that are meant to counteract hangover symptoms the next morning, this hangover cure purports to stop one even before it starts. So, what is the SunUp hangover cure, and is it effective?
How SunUp Works
SunUp is a powdered supplement that contains many ingredients including: mung bean powder, a plethora of vitamins, broccoli extract, green tea extract, and potassium. Before drinking, you dissolve the powder into a glass of water and drink it before heading out for your first drink. While you imbibe, SunUp is hard at work combatting the four biggest culprits of a hangover:
- impaired cognitive functioning
- nausea
- headache
- drowsiness
The first is the buildup of acetaldehyde, a byproduct of alcohol that is toxic. SunUp boosts the enzymes in the liver that help break down the buildup of this toxin into substances that aren’t as harmful. SunUp will also suppress the autoimmune response that comes with alcohol consumption. While drinking, the immune system ramps up, causing inflammation and a general feeling of discomfort and sickness.
SunUp also contains ingredients that help with balancing the levels of glutamine in the system. Glutamine is crucial to many bodily functions. After a night of drinking, these levels are depleted only to replenish themselves while you sleep. This actually causes you to lose sleep after alcohol consumption. Lastly, SunUp also claims to restore essential vitamins and electrolytes that are lost while you are drinking, combatting alcohol toxicity and reducing or eliminating the effects of a hangover.
Is SunUp Effective?
For those that like to consume alcohol regularly, SunUp may sound too good to be true. So, is it? Some researchers, including Dr. Robert Swift, Ph.D. at Brown University thinks that unfortunately might be the case. Swift states that without a clinical trial, which SunUp has not yet had, it’s impossible to say if something works or not.
Another factor that’s more problematic than just ending up with a hangover even after using the product, is that SunUp has not been approved by the FDA. That means there’s no way to tell if it will have any adverse effects when mixed with other medication, or if a person takes it that is allergic to any of its ingredients. When either of these things happen, SunUp may actually be doing more harm than good.
